About us

Who we are

In the year 2008, a tiny yet unheard of seed was planted by a group of enthusiastic primary eye care providers in the country. This seed took root in a fertile soil grew to be a sapling. Today it is a healthy and a strong tree which is providing shades all over this island encompassing the field of Optometry and Orthoptics. This was how Ceylon Council of Optometry and Orthoptics (CCOO) was formed in 2009 which was a national requirement at the time. Initially there were 15 members and it has grown up to over 200 Optometrists and few Orthoptists.

Chairman's Message

As the registrar of Ceylon Council of Optometry & Orthoptics (CCOO), I would like to congratulate the establishment of CCOO of Sri Lanka.

CCOO, defines Optometry as a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educate & regulated (licensed/registered) and optometrist as the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care including

1) Refraction and dispensing
2) Detection, diagnosis and management of disease in the eye
3) Rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system

Education and regulation are fundamental to ensuring that the public has access to high quality eye care as well as ensuring that public health authorities and the public have confidence in the professional skills and services provided by the optometrist.

CCOO encourages all Sri Lankan optometrists who meet the standards of Sri Lankan optometry to register with the CCOO. The greater the number who do so the stronger is the message that can be sent to the Sri Lankan government to persuade them that it is the interest of both the public and the profession to introduce statutory self-regulation.

As registrar it is my singular pleasure to wish you a cheerful and warm welcome to CCOO as your council of choice. The Board of Directors as well as the members are very excited to be a part of this difficult journey that you have embarked upon. As a team we are committed to the CCOO operating plan as one of our care goal. Coupled with this is the commitment to providing you the most efficient and ethical service art all times.
